New walking trails for Bird Island Lodge

   Well we have been talking bout this for some time, and recently I started doing an audit of our walking trails, and found them overgrown due to nonuse during the lockdown. The two new trails are walkable, but currently have no benches or tables at the rest stops on the way.  The two walking trails under repair, need rest stops, as well as some hides or screens at selected butterfly hotspots. The birds in the bush here are not that skittish, but as you get closer to the rural housing spots, some birds become extremely nervous and seem to be awear that they are on the menu. The other day I was in the bush alone, and had an incident where the vines I was pulling out the path broke an old rotten tree.  Problem was that there was a #BirdsNest situated at the exact spot where this rotten tree snapped. I was distracted by some strange pink moving things inside the tree that was about one and half meters off the trail.   It was three tiny birdies, with no feathers and super big bulging eyes

Butterfly Butterfly sit still I want your pic...

 I just wasted about 4 hours trying to get a pic to post and advertise our camp sites here at Bird Island Lodge.  Came home for lunch and my mate Norman brags with four wonderful photos of a butterfly that posed for him. Butterly lovers will really enjoy camping at Bird Island Lodge on the Nibela Peninsula of lake St Lucia. Now we need a little help here to catalogue and identify the many butterfly species found here on the Nibela Peninsula of Lake St Lucia. We are not inside the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, but there are no fences between us and the park. This makes bird Island Lodge a unique birding destination, where we have Bird Island just North East of us, False Bay and the associated Sand Forests South West of us, the Flamingoes on the Hluhluwe river mud flats just North West of us,  and Hells Gate South of us, and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park is on three sides of the Nibela Peninsula Just in case you do not know, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park is South Africa's first world he

Butterflies, wasps, spiders and creepy crawlies for you to photograph.

 At this time of the year, late summer / early spring the insects here at Bird Island Lodge are truly awesome. Then there are the Flamingos, Pelicans and other water birds at the Mkhze swamps on the North East side or HluHluwe river on the North west side...,   Lots of real great birding opportunities, and we have an in house bird guide, Sfiso Mdluli.  More about him in future posts once I have got to know him a bit better,

Abundant nature and great #BIRDING opportunities at Bird Island Lodge

Nature and wildlife are abundant here at Kwa Nibela, and we would like you to come pay us a visist. The Nibela peninsula is an awesome #BirdingLocation  with flamingos,  pelicans, herons and many other water birds found where the Mkuze swamps  and the Hluhluwe rivers spill into the St. Lucia Estuary.  Then there are the many other terrestrial birds like doves, finches and horn-bills that  frequent the area as well. Spiders, wasps, ants and butterflies are also plentiful, as are the many other creepy crawly things, like SCORPIONS and beetles, with the occasional tortoise  and some not so common birds. come pay us a visist you may be fortunate to see a local resident SKILLY  (Skilpad) the tortorse that floats around and enjoys the sun shine her at Bird Island Lodge in Kwa Nibela... come pay us a visist You need to be carefull of these fellas, coz their sting can be quite painful. them fellas with small pincers are more venomous than these guys with big fat pincers.....  always a pleasure

Bird Island Lodge offers great break aways and reasonable rates

Bird Island Lodge has the most awesome view of bird island, in the north east corner of lake St. Lucia.  The lodge is on the Nibela Peninsula near Sobhengu Lake Lodge and Nibela Lake Lodge.  All three of these lodges are on the Nibela Peninsula, which for some strange reason falls out side of the iSimangaliso Wetland Parks influence.
